Highlights 2012
• Bexley High School earned a Gold Medal top rating and the number two ranking of all Ohio public high schools, in the Best High Schools analysis by U.S. News and World Report. BHS was among 21,776 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia included in the review identifying the top public schools that prepare students for college success.
• Three BHS seniors advanced to Finalist status in the National Merit Scholarship Program: Thomas Gundy, Aaron Pelz and Emily Rapport. In addition, the following students were Commended Scholars: Henry Dolin, Margaret Flanigan, Meredith Margulies, Rachael Shapiro, Nathan Taylor and Ivy Tran.
• BMS seventh grader Spencer Brooks earned the right to compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. by winning Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication Regional Spelling Bee. Mr. Brooks came within three points of making the qualifying round for the national finals.
• BHS was included on the national College Board’s AP Achievement list of 388 school districts that have had success in expanding participation in their more rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) classes.
• For the first time, BHS provided extra support to Bexley students who are the first in their families to attend college. The district’s College Readiness Task Force, assisting with the effort to increase access to college, also offered free SAT and ACT practice tests on school holidays.
• Senior Kate Gatterdam was awarded a full scholarship to Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. One of only ten Presidential Scholarship recipients, she receives tuition and expenses of some $100,000 over four years.
• Bexley choral students rehearsed and performed in the spring with guest artist and composer Eric Barnum. The program included a piece commissioned for the BHS Vocal Ensemble performance choir. Vocal Ensemble also performed for the American Choral Directors Association Central Division Conference in March 2012 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and toured France and England in summer 2012.
• A team of BMS eighth grade Advanced Technology students won Ohio’s eCYBERMISSION competition, sponsored by the United States Army. Simon Luscher, Roman Garcia, John Hartshorne, and Hunter Brown addressed the issue of cigarette butts as litter on streets and in waterways.
• Sophomore Jasper Lau spearheaded projects to fight against human trafficking, raising awareness and generating funds for Rahab’s Hideway and the Central Ohio Rescue and Restore Coalition.
• Kelly Schulze, Bexley’s Family and Consumer Science teacher, received the 2011 Ohio ACTE (Association for Career and Technical Education) Pacesetter Award recognizing "individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership or innovative program achievements through service to Ohio ACTE.”
• Senior Rachael Shapiro was selected to be one of ten Kelley Scholars at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The only out-of-state student to be so honored, she receives four years of standard tuition and fees, as well as other funding for living expenses and study abroad.
• Willis Brown, educational aide at BMS, was chosen to participate in Partners of the Americas’ Farmer to Farmer Program in March in the Dominican Republic, providing technical assistance to local agricultural producers, producer organizations, and agribusinesses.
• BHS senior Jalen Robinette signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. Matthew Wareti, BHS’s four-year varsity letter winner and two-time captain, signed a National Letter of Intent to play tennis for the University of Toledo.
• BHS senior Morgan Simmons earned recognition as a National Achievement Scholar.
• The BHS Torch was one of only two high school newspapers in the state to be named an “All-Ohio” publication, the top award from the Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA), for the 2011-12 school year. Three seniors on the Torch staff were honored as part of “The Martys,” a contest for high school journalists in central Ohio: Emily Ruff, Ivy Tran and Katlin Hiller.
• BHS tennis singles player Mathew Wareti and the doubles team of Max Schottenstein and David Seckel advanced to state competition at Ohio State University, with Mr. Wareti playing in the final four. The girls’ doubles duo of Senior Lyndsey Staub and Junior Becca Landon competed at states in the fall. • 275 BHS students took 538 Advanced Placement exams.
• Ninety-one Bexley High School students earned the “AP Scholar” designation given by the national College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams. Senior Margaret Flanigan was a “National Scholar,” with average grades of 4 on all exams taken and grades of 4 or better on eight or more exams over the course of her high school career.
• Bexley High School's academic quiz team, In the Know (ITK) -- senior Sirrus Lawson Bourne, juniors Adam Soll and Evan Gutter, and sophomore Max Cohen – won The Brain Game, an academic competition videotaped at COSI and sponsored by Westfield Insurance.
• The poetry recitation of BHS junior Mallory Kassoy earned a third place finish in Ohio’s statewide Poetry Out Loud competition, held in March at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus.
• BMS students Hannah Hasseler, Ben Martin and Lorenzo Pipino performed at the White House in December with the Columbus Children's Choir, conducted by Dr. Sandra Mathias.
• BMS eighth grader Cameron Hall qualified for the state round of the National Geographic Geography Bee, held at the Ohio State University – Mansfield on March 30.
• BHS senior Sirrus Lawson Bourne organized a Volunteers of America clothing drive at the school, collecting warm socks, gloves, hats and other items.
• BHS teachers Julie Horger, Dr. Eileen McMahon and Mabi Ponce de Leon were chosen to serve on the international panel of readers of Advanced Placement (AP) exams in their areas of expertise.
• Twenty-four students from BHS’s Environmental Club participated in a river cleanup at Alum Creek this year, the highest turn out the club has had for the activity that is part of National Public Lands Day.
• Fifty Bexley High School sophomores and juniors volunteered and were chosen to serve as mentors next year to incoming freshman.
• Kebene Tesfaye, BHS junior, and Abigail Chavez, a sophomore, attended Columbus’s COSI Academy, earning full scholarships to participate in the yearlong program.
• Bexley Middle School students raised over $5,100 to provide a water catchment system for a health clinic in Piol, South Sudan. The students have organized and executed several activities over the past few months, all inspired by their reading of the book A Long Walk to Water and study of Sudanese refugees.
• BHS sophomore Abram Blau was the first Bexley student to be selected as a student thespian officer (STO) of the Ohio Educational Theatre Association.
• Bexley High School debaters Maggie Flanigan, senior and Peter Heft, sophomore, earned the right to compete in the national tournament of the National Forensics League.
• Four BHS seniors were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Academic All American Squad: Abigail Ghitman, Emily Hart, Margaret Janco and Nicole Seletz.
• The BHS Marching Band was chosen to perform live on radio station CD 101 in September.
